FAQ – Frequently asked questions

What does extrusion / extruded mean?

Extrusion is a process technology in which masses – in our case plastic – are pressed using specially made tools and brought into a defined shape using pressure and temperature. In the Döllken Lighting extrusion process, we wrap our LED conductor films with previously melted plastic in an endless process. Due to the different recipes of the material, this is even a technically very demanding co-extrusion.

Do the Döllken Lighting LED strips contain PVC?

No, none of our products, neither the sheathed tapes, nor the connectors or cables contain PVC or other materials containing chlorine. Furthermore, all substances used are of course REACH-compliant. In addition, we also process potential rejects as far as possible or ensure appropriate recycling.

Where are the products made?

We manufacture all of our LED strips and conductor films in Germany and only buy the individual components such as LED chips from well-known high-quality suppliers. Our ladder films are therefore not purchased items, but 100% German production. Most of our assembly profiles are also manufactured directly in Germany; parts are manufactured in other European countries under our quality specifications. For the ballasts and controllers on offer, we rely on a small selection of devices primarily manufactured in Asia.

What does DualWhite mean?

Our DualWhite variants (recognizable by the product name such as CoreFlex 14 / DualWhite) have two different white LED chips: a 2700 Kelvin (warm white) and a 5000 Kelvin (cold white) chip. With an appropriate control, the color temperature of the light can be adjusted as desired or the time of day – and that with just one product.

Does the MultiColor Flex tape only have an RGB color change?

Of course, the MultiColor Flex can also be ordered in its 14 / RGB or 14 / RGBW version with RGB equipment. However, it is also available in single and dual white versions.
The name MultiColor Flex originally comes from the fact that this was the first of our LED strips that had white-colored side and top surfaces. In addition, we can dye the plastic in any color and thus use the tape as a design element, even when it is switched off.

Does the LinearColor Flex tape have an RGB color change?

The LinearColor Flex tape can also be ordered as an RGB / RGBW version, with a pure white light color of various color temperatures, and as a DualWhite version.
Similar to the MultiColor Flex, the name is due to the fact that the light-emitting surface can be colored in any color in order to represent a design element even when switched off. This is a popular variant, especially for corporate lighting design.

Are the Döllken-Lighting LED strips suitable for outdoor or underwater applications?

Yes, due to our coating technology, extrusion, all of our tapes are IP68 protected, meaning they are suitable for permanent submersion in water. Nothing stands in the way of regular outdoor use – regardless of the area. We even tested our products in a water depth of 3250 m – including end caps, connectors and the transition from tape to cable. Thanks to our patented connection process, our entire system is IP68 certified and thus protected against moisture entering through capillary effects.

For which areas is your LED lighting particularly suitable?

Due to their complete IP68 and IK08 protection, our products are ideal for outdoor applications or areas with mechanical influences or difficult climatic conditions. But also indoors these advantages naturally offer security against damage from cleaning agents, contact or humidity.

How are the LED strips attached??

We have developed special aluminum mounting profiles for secure fastening of all of our extruded tapes. You can find the drawings for this on the product pages of our website or in the respective data sheets for the LED strips.

Are the aluminum profiles also suitable for underwater installations?

Aluminum is only partially suitable for underwater use. In cases where the tapes are to be used under the water surface, we recommend gluing them with assembly adhesive. We would be happy to recommend suitable types for the respective substrate. Special stainless steel or plastic profiles for assembly are also possible, depending on the application.

Is it possible to control the bands using DALI / 0-10V / DMX devices?

All of our belts can be controlled with all common protocol types when using suitable electronics. However, for reliable dimming, the devices must output a PWM signal (pulse width modulation).

What are the maximum lengths for the cables?

Due to the voltage drop, this depends on various factors such as the cable cross-section used or the length of the LED strip. As a guideline for the cable lengths via our assembly service, we assume a maximum standard length of five meters, but adapt the lengths to the project or application in consultation with our customers.

I’ve heard of “flicker” in LED lights, does this flicker also occur in your products?

Flicker is always a phenomenon that occurs in conjunction with the respective ballasts or the control and dimming of the LEDs. When using high-quality dimmers, flickering of the strips is imperceptible or even immediately harmful.

Can the LED strips also be manufactured in special colors in terms of light color or coating?

Thanks to extrusion, we can color the top layers and side surfaces of almost all of our products individually and thus also meet corporate lighting design requirements or filter out special spectral components of the light. Just get in touch with us.
